Kathmandu - Tour Destination

Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, is set in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. Kathmandu is the gateway to tourism in Nepal.

About Kathmandu

Kathmandu is the capital and the most populous city of Nepal. It is located in the Kathmandu Valley, a large valley in the high plateaus in central Nepal. It is the second largest city proper in Himalayan hill region after Srinagar, and the largest Metropolitan region in the Himalayan hill region. Kathmandu is and has been for many years the centre of Nepal's history, art, culture, and economy. It has a multi-ethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu. Tourism is an important part of the economy in the city. Kathmandu is dissected by eight rivers, the main river of the valley, the Bagmati and its tributaries, of which the Bishnumati, Dhobi Khola, Manohara Khola, Hanumante Khola, and Tukucha Khola are predominant.

Visiting Places in Kathmandu :
  • Swayambhu Aka Monkey Temple - A site on a hill overlooking the city with a large stupa and other Buddhist and Hindu iconography. One of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the country. There are 350 steps to the top - the back route is less steep but the views on the way up are not as nice.
  • Boudha Stupa - One of the most sacred sites for Tibetan Buddhism. This huge stupa is one of the largest in the world. It is located to the north-east of Dwarikas. This is another World Heritage Site. There is a 'festival' on every full moon night, a unique experience.
  • Pashupatinath - Pashupatinath Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Pashupati, and is located in Kathmandu, Nepal. This temple was classified as a World Heritage Site in 1979. This "extensive Hindu temple precinct" is a "sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati river", and is one of seven monument groups in UNESCO's designation of Kathmandu Valley.
  • Kathmandu Durbar Square - This ancient square is crowded with palaces and temples, including the current incarnation of the Kasthamandap or "Wooden house" that gives the city its name. The square has been occupied since the construction of a palace around 1000AD. This site is the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal.
